Essential Certifications for Superyacht Crew
STCW Basic Training
The Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) Basic Training is mandatory for all crew members on commercially registered vessels. This certification ensures you are prepared for safety and emergency situations at sea. SYSA offers an 11-day STCW 2010 course covering:
- Marine Fire Fighting
- Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
- Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)
- Elementary Maritime First Aid
The STCW certification is valid for five years from the date of completion.
ENG1 Medical Certificate
An ENG1 Medical Certificate is required to confirm your fitness for work at sea. This certificate is essential for all crew members and should be renewed periodically.
Training for Deckhands
As an entry-level position, a deckhand plays a crucial role in the maintenance and operation of the yacht. While prior sailing experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory. SYSA recommends the following certifications to enhance your employability:

Training for Stewards/Stewardesses
Stewards and stewardesses are responsible for guest services and maintaining the yacht’s interior. A background in hospitality is advantageous but not required. SYSA offers a comprehensive Steward/ess Training Course focusing on:
- Safety at sea
- Silver service
- Wine serving procedures
- Housekeeping duties specific to yachts
Recommended certifications include:
- SYSA Steward/ess Training (5 days)
- PDSD and STCW Basic Training (11 days)
- Catering Level II MCA/Highfield Food Health Safety (2 days)
- MCA Medical Certificate ENG1
